On August 18, the forum “Investing in the jobs of the future” was held by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation at the Centro Cultural de la Ciencia, located in the Polo Científico Tecnológico de Buenos Aires.

During his first visit to the country, Jim Kim participated in the forum with Ariel Arrieta, co-founder of NXTP Labs; Silvia Torres Carbonell, Director of the IAE Business School and Alec Oxenford, founder of the OLX buying and selling website.

During the panel, Kim said that technology presents us with enormous opportunities and challenges:”In the face of the progress of automation, our task is to continue creating new jobs that will require new capabilities”. He said that we need to think about policies to prepare for these changes and work actively to create a business ecosystem. Silicon Valley is a great example of the creation of an entrepreneurial ecosystem that has allowed and allows for greater investment activity,”he said. Kim told young entrepreneurs and students that new jobs will be technology and innovation related in the “next race to be competitive in the future”.

Ariel Arrieta, following his line of argument, said that “we must be able to see what specialization is going to place us on the world map in the future” and stressed the importance of being able to measure the social impact of an undertaking, beyond the economic. We must continue to be committed to innovation in order to be the engine of change.

The closing ceremony was led by the Minister of Science, Lino Barañao, who thanked Dr. Kim and the World Bank for their support over many years to promote the Ministry’s central mission of creating wealth from knowledge.
